America Recycles Day – Contest runs from October 15 through November 15 and encourages all county schools to compete in an aluminum recycling contest. Three prizes are awarded to schools recycling the most aluminum. Last year schools recycled 2000 pounds of aluminum cans!


Earth Day can contest - Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. The aluminum can contest is similar to America Recycles Day but runs from March 22 through April 22. The winning school will receive a recycled plastic hand chair.


Paper recycling contest - This contest is new this school year and encourages all schools in Macon County participating in the paper recycling program to enter the contest. Two schools will be awarded a cash prize for the winning essays on their recycling efforts.


Milk jug lid recycling contest - This contest is also in the beginning stages and started last year as a way to encourage plastic recycling at home. Students are encouraged to recycle their gallon or half gallon milk jugs and bring the lids from the milk containers into school and compete to be the school with the most lids. Winning schools receives a recycled plastic hand chair for their efforts.


Earth day poster contest - The poster contest has been very successful with students. Last year over 600 posters were submitted with their own interpretations of what Earth day means to them. McDonalds sponsors this contest and provides each student who enters with an ice cream cone certificate and winners in each category receive a $20 gift certificate to McDonalds.


Earth day photography contest – Middle school and Jr. High Students are encouraged to submit a 5 X 7 picture of the natural beauty of Macon County taken in the current school year. Winners receive gift certificates to the local movie theater.
