The goal of the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act and the Macon County Solid Waste Management Plan is to encourage and promote responsible solid waste management practices (in Illinois and Macon County). Responsible solid waste management includes, in part, promoting and facilitating recycling programs as a means of diverting materials from landfill disposal and providing opportunities for the public to dispose of alternative and hazardous wastes safely. The Illinois Landfill Tipping Fee Surcharge was created to provide funding for counties with landfills for solid waste management programs. Through this funding, the Macon County Solid Waste Management Department has established a grant program to assist local governments, institutions, businesses and individuals with programs that advance this goal.
