SURVIVING SPOUSE BENEFITS
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) For survivors to be eligible, the Veteran must have died of his/her Service-Connected Condition, or Veteran was 100% Service Connected for 10 years preceding death. DIC eligible widows receive a monthly payment of $1033.00 per month.
Death Pension (Widows Pension) For survivors to be eligible, the Veteran must have served during a war time period.  The survivor must also meet income levels.  Currently, the monthly amount payable is: $591.00.  This amount is offset by any other household income received.  i.e. Survivor receives $200.00 from Social Security and $200.00 from a retirement pension, this equals $400.00.  The VA will provide $191.00 to bring the income level up to $591.00.  If other income rises, VA will adjust accordingly, to keep income level at $591.00.  All income must be reported to VA to avoid an overpayment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • If the widow/widower was previously married to a veteran killed in active Service, he/she may be eligible for reinstatement of DIC benefits.  Please check with the Veterans Office for more information.
  • If you are unable to find the Veteran’s Discharge/DD214, do not hesitate to call the Veterans Office for assistance.
  • The Veterans Office will be happy to complete all forms and applications for Veterans Benefits.  There is no charge for this service.
